The May Holiday in Wieliczka

This year's National Flag Holiday celebrations have for the first time been organised in the form of an open-air family holiday event with a strong patriotic undertone. The programme of the Wieliczka May Holidays was aimed at both the elder and young, who attended the event with their families, altogether. There was "The Clown Dyzio Show" with the children's repertoire while the elder specators, still remembering the Solidarity times were surely thrilled by the fact they could see a performance by Jan Pietrzak and the"Pod Egidą" Cabaret.

An extremely interesting accent was provided by the rivalisation of the Wieliczka choirs in the patriotic song contest.  A colour was added to the event by the dancing performance by the "The Little Slavs" ensemble and the white-and-red flags handed by the organisers, fluttering in the hands of the participants.

The open-air event took place under the banner "Come for the national flag and celebrate in the Main Square".
In accordance with this announcement, at approximately 5 PM, people handing Polish flags appeared in the Main Square, which indicated commencement of the May Holidays.
It was the choirs of Wieliczka competing in the patriotic song contest which appeared first on the open-air stage. The jury judged the performances in two categories: the a'capella choirs and the vocal-instrumental ensembles.

The public listened to songs such as "Welcome thou May Morning Star", "The soldier marched" or "March, march Polonia!" with great interest and welcomed them with great applause.
The jury decided to award the first place in the category of the a'capella choirs to the Magnum Sal choir from the Wieliczka High School. The successive places in this category were taken by:the girls' choir "Little Grain" ("Ziarenko") from Podstolice and the "Allegro" choir from the Wieliczka Grammar.
Among the prize-winning vocal-instrumental ensembles there also were: the "Klemenciaki" ensemble from the St.Klemens parish (1st place),the "Cantiamo" choir from Podstolice (2nd place) as well as the ensemble from the Primary School in Siercza.

Moreover, there was the conclusion of the competition the subject of which was "an important event from the history of Poland".
The jury, after having seen 57 works awarded prizes in two categories:grammar school pupils and primary school pupils.
Dominika Cisoń from the Wieliczka Grammar School was judged as the best in the first category, while the distinctions went to: Anna Górecka and Paulina Szymoniak from the Wieliczka Grammar.
The winners in the primary school pupils category were: Klaudia Kaczor (1st place) from the Primary School No.3 in Wieliczka, while other places were taken by (respectively): Olga Gibała from the Primary School No.3 in Wieliczka and Dominik Gąsiorowski from the Gołkowice Primary School.
The announcement concerning the results was made after the performance of the "Little Slavs"ensemble and the appearance by the Clown Dyzio Show group.

Around 8 PM the most expected guest appeared on the stage - it was Jan Pietrzak and his "Pod Egidą" Cabaret.
As always, the artist interlaced his songs with numerous anegdotes and autobiographical tales, and at the end he sang the long-awaited by the public "So that Poland may be Poland".
The final accent of the Wieliczka May Holiday was a performance by the Jarosław Kaganiec Quartet and a laser show.
The event amassed close to 900 participants.
