The harvest and the thanks

The end of the summer is the time of harvest and the traditional harvest festival. During the long holiday weekend (15th-17th August) the residents of Chorąwica, Grajow,and collectivelly, Mietniow and Pawlikowice organised thanksgiving celebrations for this year's harvest.The festival was accompanied by numerous attractions prepared by the organisers including: performances by the regional ensembles,tasting of the regional cuisine and a traditional dancing party.The celebrations in Pawlikowice commenced with a holy service celebrated by the parson Czesław Knebel in the St. Michael Archangel parish church.

The celebrations' initiators were the Mietniow Village Soletstvo Board as well as the Parish Council of the Michael Archangel Parish.

During the service a harvest wreath, old Polish cake and bread were consecrated.

The residents laid flowers, fruits, wine and bread in front of the altar.

The village administrators Józefa Sosin (Mietniów) and Ryszard Płonka (Pawlikowice) were the ceremony's hosts

The liturgy was accompanied by a psalm performed by Wiesław Popiołek and Katarzyna Chorobik.

After the holy service the members of the soletstvo boards and the parish board offered the bread and cake to the numerously gathered residents.

The contributors of the bread and cakes were bakeries from Gorzków and Mietniow.

The celebrations in Chorągwica, taking place on 15th August,had a different course.

The residents thanked for the harvest with a harvest ritual conducted by the Regional "Mietniowiacy" Ensemble.

During the ceremony the ensemble has also shown regional dances along with the so called "polka baciarka".

The celebrations were attended by the guests who came on invitation of the organisers including:the chairman of the Town Council Zbigniew Zarębski as well as the vice-chairman of the Town Council Adam Marek Panuś and the vice commandant of the State Fire Brigade Aleksander Starowicz, the village administrators of Mietniow, Pawlikowice, Sułów.

The hosts of the event were: the Chorągwica village administrator - Krystyna Starowicz as well as the Voluntary Fire Brigade chairman– Andrzej Perz.

The numerously gathered guests along with the residents of Chorągwica watched a performance of Red Riding Hood prepared by the children being the readers of the local library,

At the end there was a concert by the Biskupice Brass Band.

The harvest festival celebrations are a still alive element of folk tradition in the Wieliczka Municipality.
